CDP Team Spotlight
Alejandra Mendoza, Senior Manager of People Operations
Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you:
As the Senior Manager of People Operations, I oversee the day-to-day aspects of the HR operations function at CDP. My work varies depending on what is going on operationally, but for the most part I manage the recruitment process for any open roles at CDP, keep track of any employee changes/updates in ADP, respond to any questions or concerns from colleagues, among many other responsibilities too numerous to list.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
I genuinely love connecting with and helping people. I truly enjoy working in an operational setting where I can support the business from a people perspective and be a resource to my colleagues.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
My dream job would be traveling the world and getting to know people from different cultures and trying their foods, like the late Anthony Bourdain.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
For shows, I’m currently watching “Paradise,” “1923,” “The White Lotus” and “90 Day Fiancé” (it’s my guilty pleasure 😊). My current podcasts are “Something Was Wrong,” “Up First” (I listen to this every morning!) and “Crime Junkie.” I’m reading “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan. For music, I honestly listen to so many genres that it’s hard to choose, but on a typical workday I listen to a mix of Snoh Aalegra, Bad Bunny, Adele, John Legend, Beyonce…
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
I’ve always wanted to learn gardening and started about two years ago. I am now working on perfecting that craft and I get so excited when I see my fruits and veggies flourish! I would also love to learn how to knit and crochet. I like the idea of being able to make things by hand and I’ve read that both knitting and crocheting are good craft activities to strengthen our brains. My friends tease me and say I am entering into an early grandma era, but I just love these things!

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you:
I’m the Training Implementation Manager here at CDP and I work closely with stations that are currently or recently onboarded into the MSB Co-op. Most days, I’m facilitating a variety of instructor-led trainings: from training kickoff and follow-up calls to intensive transition period training weeks and check-in calls with stations in the process of going live with MSB processes. Also, I manage TalentLMS, our Learning Management System, and work on creating and improving our trainings resources like Knowledge Articles, TalentLMS Training Modules, and Training Videos.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
Working closely with client stations, I get to see firsthand the positive impact that we have not only for stations fundraising, but also in their enhanced ability to support and enrich their local communities. Public media’s mission is more important than ever now, and a free media is paramount to ensuring democracy’s survival in these trying times. I am proud to work with so many kind, passionate and thoughtful people here at CDP and throughout the MSB Co-op that truly believe in our important mission.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
My two main passions outside of work are music and cinema. If I could do anything in the world, I’d love to be either a touring rock and roll musician or a filmmaker. For any cinephiles that live near an AMC, I highly recommend their AMC movie pass which lets you see up to 3 movies a week for about $25 a month.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
For books, I’m a major David Lynch fan and have been reading his autobiography, “Catching the Big Fish,” to commemorate the late, great artist. For TV, the new season of “The Wheel of Time” is airing now on Amazon Prime and it’s an easy recommendation for any “Lord of the Rings” and “Game of Thrones” fans out there. For music, I’m a big rock and roll nerd and I’ve been listening to Neil Young’s “On the Beach” LP a lot lately too.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
Music is one of my main passions and I taught myself how to play guitar in my late teens to early twenties, but I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the drums too. As a child, I wanted to play drums in the elementary school band, but my mom said it would be too loud and I ended up playing the trombone (poorly) instead, much to my chagrin.

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you:
I am part of the Business Intelligence and Analytics team, so my day-to-day work involves a lot of data. I typically spend the day developing and maintaining Tableau reports, developing parts of our backend data ecosystem, supporting internal teams’ data needs, and supporting cases as well as answering questions where I can.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
What really excites me about my work is its methodical nature. I enjoy working with data like a giant puzzle and trying to put the pieces together to create something bigger and better. I’m also grateful to be able to work with CDP on supporting public media and each station’s mission.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
I love creating things — crafting, art and writing. I enjoy being creative in my free time, but it would be a dream to pursue it as a career!
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
I’ve been listening to the podcast “The Adventure Zone,” which tabletop gaming geeks will enjoy. Also, I’m only seven years late to binging “Ozark”!
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
I’ve always wanted to learn to scuba dive — the ocean is so diverse and exciting. I’d love to be able to see it up close in a way that’s unique to diving.

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you:
I’m the Associate Director of Station Finance at CDP, working exclusively with MSB stations in creating their budgets/reforecasts, reporting, expenses, and more. A typical day for me depends where in the fiscal where in their fiscal year various MSB stations are; Between February and October I’m working on MSB budgets, in addition to working on reporting and participating in meetings with MSB stations. Often, my days are shaped by what emails or messages arrive from Client Services and/or stations and how I can serve their needs.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
I really enjoy collaborating with my talented colleagues at CDP. We all contribute to delivering value and service to our MSB stations. I also really enjoy meeting with stations, getting to know them, and helping to answer their questions or provide insight regarding performance and trends. Also, using existing data to answer previously unanswerable questions is (dare I say) fun.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
A dream job would likely include either or both of my twin interests of writing and music. I used to write for general publication at newspapers and magazines, so next dream step would be attempting a book. A total dream would be a professional musician, bass player and songwriter specifically.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
The currently neglected novel is Green for Danger by Christianna Brand. I’m always listening to as much music as possible, right now these are on rotation: Joe Henderson’s “Power To The People,” Joan As Police Woman’s “Lemons, Lime and Orchids,” Scientist’s “Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires.“ The last film I saw was “Sorcerer,” a reinterpretation of a French thriller called “The Wages of Fear,” about a haphazard group of folks transporting explosives and nitroglycerin across a jungle in two rickety trucks.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
I’d love to learn carpentry, to build small furniture for my kiddo and bookcases too. Small craft sailing on the sea has always been a dream as well.

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you:
As a Fundraising Operations Manager at CDP, my team is heavily involved in pledge support, premium fulfillment, and answering operational inquiries through the case system. A typical day for me might involve working with team members on premium or break code requests, meeting with vendors, and triaging cases to the Operations team.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
Operations involves a lot of behind-the-scenes coordination, and I really enjoy seeing how all the moving parts come together to support fundraising efforts for MSB stations. I have a great team, and I feel lucky to work with people every day who are so supportive and dedicated to the work that we do.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
In another life, I would love to be a travel agent. I absolutely love traveling, especially learning about different cultures, history, and food. I also love researching destinations and making detailed travel itineraries, so I feel like it could be a great fit!
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
Recently, I have been rewatching “Parks and Recreation” and the “Haunting of Hill House” Netflix series. I am on the lookout for new shows, so please let me know if anyone has recommendations 😊. As far as reading, I am currently bouncing between Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy and a book of Daphne du Maurier’s short stories.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
One thing I would love to learn is dancing! I have always loved to dance, but my style is, let’s say, more on the improvisational side. My husband is Puerto Rican, and we have recently been trying to learn some Latin dances like salsa and bachata. I’ve been having so much fun and it’s something I would love to become good at.

As the Associate Director of Membership Marketing at CDP, I oversee all aspects of direct mail, from creative strategy to seamless execution. My day involves checking in with the Membership Marketing Team to ensure they have everything they need to keep the trains running smoothly, updating other teams on any production developments, and continually seeking ways to make our processes more efficient and effective.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
I’m energized by the thrill of process breakthroughs — big or small. For instance, the new White Proof process gives stations a holistic view of letter samples, rather than just the copy, in the approval stage. Finding smarter ways to work that improve our services never fails to make my day.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
If I weren’t at CDP, I’d pursue a role that blends my love for books and writing with my knack for improving processes — maybe as an efficiency consultant for environmental nonprofits or a sustainable publishing advocate.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
I’m always reading — right now, it's The Will of the Many by James Islington. For TV, I never get tired of Seinfeld, and every winter, I revisit Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Musically, I’m into a mix of early 2000s pop-punk and mellow Lo-fFi, colored with a few nostalgic throwbacks.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
The list is long! I’d love to try programming, improve my golf game, learn another language, run a marathon, or maybe even write a book someday. I’m always looking for the next challenge!

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you.
I am a Fundraising Operations Coordinator here at CDP. On a typical day I handle uploads and reconciliation of canvassing donations, pledge preparation, case work and contribute to data hygiene projects. Some of my secondary responsibilities are to assist with ACD reconciliation and fraud review.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
I really enjoy that my work supports such a noble and needed mission that impacts communities across the country. It is easy to feel powerless in the 21st century but I know my weekday efforts from 9 to 5 have a positive and real impact.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
My dream job is to be session guitarist/audio-producer. I’ve played guitar and performed for 26 years. I love all aspects of the process, from composition and production to live performance. To me, making music is the perfect blend of people and technology.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
Nothing hits quite as hard in the morning as the special edition “Songs for the Deaf” by Queens of the Stone Age. I also enjoy electronic music made with analog technology by groups like Kraftwerk and Octave One. I move around quite a bit, so I also like getting into local classics from the countries I visit.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
I love skateboarding but I’m absolutely terrible at it! I’ve always wanted to learn how to do a kickflip on the skateboard, like a perfect, clean, casual, undeniable kickflip.

Tell us what you do at CDP and what a typical day might look like for you.
My main tasks at CDP revolve around triaging cases and ensuring clients are getting the information they need as quickly as possible. Sometimes it's as simple as passing along some Knowledge Articles in the case system, but this can also involve jumping on a screenshare with a client that has a more complex issue, or even trying to wrangle internal staff to come up with some best practice recommendations for an issue we haven't encountered yet. I also do some more back-end case tracking and evaluation.
What inspires/excites you about your work?
I love having face-to-face (or is it face-to-screen?) time with our clients and getting to know the people that keep public media running! Especially with how impersonal CRM systems can feel, I like being able attach some humanity to the system that our clients interact with every day.
If you weren't working at CDP, what would your dream job be?
My dream job is to be a modern day Robert Moses, except instead of tearing down neighborhoods to build highways, I want to tear down roads to install more train lines. I don't have a driver’s license, so my dream is to see Boston bring back all the streetcar lines we had before urban renewal. I have a whole rant about this - feel free to message me if you want the full hour.
What are you watching/streaming/reading/listening to these days?
I just recently watched “Pulgasari,” a North Korean monster movie from the early 80's, as well as a rewatch of “Wet Hot American Summer.” I've been watching through a list of obscure foreign films with a friend of mine, and shockingly, the Internet Archive has had all of them available for streaming, so it's been a lot easier than we were expecting. I HIGHLY recommend “Family Game,” as well.
What's something you've always wanted to try or learn to do?
I'm sort of OK at using a Kendama, but I always dream about being one of those people who makes it on to YouTube compilations with their Kendama skills and tricks. It's a super old school Japanese cup and ball toy, but it got picked up by the skater crowd in America, and now there's all these crazy tricks people post online, none of which I can do.
